Getting a credit card after a bankruptcy
If I file Chapter 7, how long until I can get a credit card?
After Chapter 7 discharge, which comes 3-4 months after filing in most cases, you’ll find it very easy to get new credit cards.
Our clients tell us that they have plenty of credit card applications sent to them in the mail, usually at a little higher interest rate than they would like; but still they’re offering them additional credit.
These credit card companies know that you can’t file another Chapter 7 for 8 years, so you need to be very careful about credit cards after Chapter 7 relief. Maybe you could consider something like a debit card, so that your credit is limited to what you have on deposit in the bank, because I know people need a credit card today. You can’t check into a hotel or fly on an airplane – things like that – rent a car, you need a credit card for that. But be very careful after Chapter 7 because it’s so easy to get back in debt again that you have trouble repaying.
