Does Pfizer, the drug manufacturer, care more about money than the well-being of Lipitor users?

That question could be argued for many drug manufacturers, and Pfizer’s most recent actions could help make that argument.

Lipitor, which is Pfizer’s hallmark drug, has made it billions of billions of dollars since being introduced in 1997.

The drug was originally developed by Warner-Lambert with Pfizer agreeing to partner and bring it marketing success in exchange for a portion of its annual revenue. Warner-Lambert estimates had annual sales of Lipitor peaking at $500 million.

However, in its first year, Lipitor far-surpassed those peaking estimates and brought in annual sales of $865 million. Then the next year, $2.2 billion. In 2000, Pfizer bought out Warner-Lambert for $115 billion and Lipitor sales continued to peak each year, topping out at $12.7 billion in 2007 before dipping a little bit in 2010 ($10.7 billion).

So, it’s safe to say that Lipitor has been a money magnet for Pfizer – at one time Lipitor was the largest-selling prescription drug on the planet – but is it safe for its users?

Lipitor has been facing heavy lawsuits from women alleging the drug caused Type 2 diabetes. This is an investigation that Darrell Castle & Associates has became involved in and is accepting cases for.

Since these lawsuits began to surface, Lipitor’s patent expired in 2011. However, the drug was such a financial success, Pfizer can’t just call it quits.

Pfizer is now hoping to introduce an over-the-counter version of Lipitor (atorvastatin) in the near future.

Will Pfizer succeed? Will this new over-the-counter version of Lipitor carry the same dangerous alleged side effects of the original prescription version? Does it really matter to them as long as they’re making money?

Those are all legitimate questions.
