A Shelby County Attorney for Your Child’s Social Media Case

Our law firm recently announced we’re joining a lawsuit against social media giants Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat. As a child social media lawyer in Shelby County, TN, I’ve seen the harm these apps have caused.

I believe social media has done irreparable harm to children and teens’ mental health. And if your family has been impacted, we can help.

Here’s what you need to know about why we’re pursuing this lawsuit and whether you might have a case.

The Impact of Social Media on Child Mental Health

It seems like every day, more data comes out about how social media affects our brains. It has addictive qualities similar to drugs and leads to higher rates of depression and anxiety. And that’s for adults—imagine how much worse it is for kids, whose brains are still forming.

Social media draws children in from an early age and often exposes them to very dangerous content. Children who use these apps have reported higher depression and lower self-esteem. Some have even found self-harm guides on the apps, including information encouraging:

As a result, parents of some children and teens report their kids’ personalities have changed completely. They’ve stopped enjoying things they once loved. Some children and teens have needed psychiatric treatment. And in some cases, they’ve even lost their lives.

What Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat Did (and Didn’t Do)

We now know from internal company data that the social media platforms knew about these risks to children and teens and made few if any changes.

Here’s some of what we believe the apps did wrong:

  • allowed minors and very young children to access exploitative content
  • used algorithms that focused on engagement even if it meant pushing eating disorder content
  • hosted content that taught children how to get around parental controls
  • maintained messaging systems that made very young children vulnerable to bullying, harassment, and abuse

And while all of that is terrible, we also believe they failed our kids by their neglect. Here’s just some of what they didn’t do when they had the chance:

  • failed to verify children’s ages, despite their own 13+ age policies
  • refused to protect kids from their own algorithms, which encouraged self-harm
  • never warned parents or the public properly about the risks to children and teens
  • didn’t make changes or heed warnings when confronted by parents or even Congress.

At every turn, these companies could have stopped targeting children or controlled their own algorithms appropriately. They could have made changes to private messaging for minors, limited their time on the apps, or told parents the risks. Instead, they hid the dangers, and children suffered and died.
