Hello, I’m Darrell Castle and I’m an attorney licensed to practice law in the state of Tennessee and if you’re taking the drug Xarelto, then I’d like to ask you a question.
Let’s say you go into your doctor’s office and he prescribes this drug for you for atrial fibrillation – or A-Fib as most people call it – because he says it’s going to help you. Perhaps you were on Warfarin and he wants you to get off Warfarin and take this new drug, Xarelto.
What if he said to you, “If you take this drug, you have a somewhat reasonable expectation that you will have an unexpected and uncontrollable bleeding event.” Many people bleed to death when they’re on this drug because the bleeding can’t be controlled once it starts. You can have bleeding in your GI tract and not know it. You can have bleeding in your brain, a cerebral vascular event – that type of thing. All of those things can be caused by this drug.
Would you still take it or would you ask questions about it?
Let’s say also that he’ll explain to you if you had an accident while taking this drug – a fall down or something like that where the doctor said you’ll need immediate surgery to save your life or prevent some other damage – but he can’t give you that surgery because Xarelto would cause uncontrollable bleeding and you might bleed to death during surgery so you have to wait until it passes through your system.
Would you still take this drug? Especially if Warfarin would do the job just as well, but without the one benefit advertised for Xarelto, which is being “no monitoring of routine blood tests.”
Warfarin required routine blood tests and one of the sales points for Xarelto is that it does not.
But there is mounting evidence all the time that says Xarelto is associated with severe uncontrollable bleeding. If you are taking Xarelto, never stop taking any prescription drug without checking with your physician first, but be mindful of those symptoms and if you know someone, or you have had an experience like I described, then you may want to see a practitioner experienced in these types of cases, folks.
