Tennessee Suspends Memphis Nursing Home

Posted on January 15, 2016
Tennessee has suspended another nursing home: this time the 147-bed Civic Health and Rehabilitation Center located in on Old Getwell Road near the airport in Southeast Memphis. The state Department of Health has suspended admission into the facility and imposed a $5000 fine after a month-long investigation. Among other alarming problems, the department cites deficiencies with the center’s administration, medical care, food services, infection control, and residents’ rights. In addition, federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services have terminated their agreement with the center – a common step for the agencies after investigations into a nursing home produce negative results. The site will have 30 days to move their Medicare and Medicaid residents to an acceptable alternative. As nursing home
The Commercial Appeal reported yesterday afternoon that refunds totaling greater than $12.8 million may be waiting for over 16,000 Tennessee taxpayers who have not filed their 2010 income tax return, according to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). However, if these taxpayers wanted to collect the money, they must file with the IRS no later than April 15. There’s no penalty for filing late if you qualify for a refund, but taxpayers seeking their 2010 refund may have their checks held if they haven’t filed returns for 2011 and 2012. The refunds will also be applied to any amounts still owed to the IRS or their state tax agency and may also be used to offset unpaid child support or past
The Commercial Appeal reported today that the originally intended 2-4% tuition increase could actually spike closer to 8% in Tennessee. The new, higher projection was caused by Gov. Bill Haslam’s failure on his budget proposal to fully-fund the performance outcomes-based formula for higher education created by the state legislature in 2010. What does this mean for college students in Tennessee? In general, a tuition increase means more student loans and more student loans means more debt. Unless you go to the University of Memphis. “For the University of Memphis, our position is very clear: We don’t propose a tuition increase; we don’t want a tuition increase,” Interim President Brad Martin said. It remains a little unclear as to whether there will
According to the Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development, the unemployment rate in Tennessee decreased to 6.7% in March. This number compares to 6.9% in February and 8.3% last March. This also compares to a national rate of 6.7%. March was the seventh straight month the state’s unemployment rate improved. Though the unemployment rate in the city of Memphis always stays higher than the national average, this is a promising statistic for the state of Tennessee. Memphis has made its own strives to curb a discouraging unemployment rate with multiple job fairs and companies moving operations to Memphis, such as Conduit Global and Voight & Schweitzer. Do You Text and Drive? Try These Apps

Posted on January 15, 2016
It’s no secret I’m against texting and driving, as anyone should be.  Any message you are wanting to send while driving can wait – it’s not worth your life. I supported the texting while driving campaign by AT&T last year and I was even on Action News 5 to discuss it. Not only is it extremely dangerous to text while driving, but in the state of Tennessee, it’s illegal. Unfortunately, people still do it all the time.  I see it from my own car at intersections. Do you want to stop texting and driving?  Try one of these apps designed to prevent it. AT&T DriveMode – This app limits features on your phone.  Once the app is selected, automated replies will be sent to people calling

We’ve talked before on the dangers of driving in Memphis, and statistics back that up. However, what you may not know is how much texting and driving affects Tennessee drivers. According to this infographic, the state of Tennessee led the nation in 2011 for the number of reported fatal crashes involving cell phones with 93 fatalities. In second place fell California with 22 reported fatalities. In fact, if you add up the number of fatal crashes involving cell phones in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th highest-ranked states, you’ll find Tennessee still has more than double the amount. This could be the result of one of two things. Tennessee is more honest and detailed when it comes to reporting these accidents
