Free yourself from the box of debt through a bankruptcy By: Darrell Castle Harry Browne, an old friend of mine, wrote a great article I saw in a newsletter on the secret of escaping “The Box Trap.” It really hit home as a bankruptcy attorney as we strive in our office to help our clients escape the box trap of debt. “You’re in the Box Trap if you tolerate any such situation by assuming there’s no way out of it,” Harry wrote. “The first thing to recognize is that you’re paying a price every day you remain in the box. You’re forgoing more attractive alternatives. And you suffer discomfort just from knowing that you don’t like the situation, plus the
You may assume airlines are just as liable for mistakes and injuries as any transportation company. The truth is actually quite a bit more complicated. Airline liability is determined by the Warsaw Convention, which ideally prevents a single disaster from ruining an airline. If an airline could be held liable for all of the damages no matter what the cause, one accident or security failure could bankrupt the company or perhaps even the industry. The Convention has gone through a variety of changes since its introduction in 1929. At present, it limits damages on airlines to $75,000, regardless of injuries. As people who have spent time in a hospital can attest, $75,000 doesn’t go very far with any substantial medical
Seven people were injured in a MATA trolley car fire this morning. According to the Memphis Fire Department (MFD), the blaze began around 10:30am at Madison and Bellevue. Officials stated that the fire started in the control stand of the trolley. There were nine passengers and a driver on board the trolley car, seven of which were carried to area hospitals.   Delayed gratification vs. instant gratification By: Darrell Castle There’s always something new and cool to buy – cars, TVs, nights out on the town, lavish beach trips – you name it! And there’s no problem with enjoying the nice things in life to the extent your budget will allow. After you pay your bills, buy your groceries and gas up your car, then what? Are you SAVING? This is where a key term comes into play, and really it’s a life philosophy – delayed gratification. Delayed gratification is a rival to instant gratification. Do you need that new car now, or should you save your money, create a financial cushion and purchase it later with almost no risk of
Starting in October, Johnson & Johnson (J&J) will add a new safety warning to the caps of Extra Strength Tylenol. The message will alert users that the popular over-the-counter drug contains acetaminophen, which has been linked to acute liver failure. Acetaminophen overdose is the number one cause of liver failure in the US. According to the Associated Press, the new warning will read: “Contains Acetaminophen” and “Always Read the Label.” But the bottles already display a warning that Tylenol contains acetaminophen and poses liver risks. So why the new addition? J&J is most likely trying to cut back on their liability with this incredibly dangerous product. Thousands of people have already reported serious liver damage from using Tylenol, and
By: Darrell Castle John was just like you last year…he was struggling with debt he just could NOT pay. Your story may be different than John’s, but the result could be the same. He had a comfortable house and a comfortable life. John was…comfortable. He’ll admit to you that he could’ve saved better. He could’ve put more money into his emergency fund. Maybe he could’ve had a more modest car. Maybe his family could’ve ate at home more rather than going out. He should’ve looked

By: Darrell Castle Did you know you can file for bankruptcy to stop those annoying creditor phone calls? When you miss important payments, your creditors still want their money. They don’t care if you’re sick or lost your job. You owe them. They want what’s theirs. They’ll often go to extreme measures to get that money. Either on their own, or by hiring a debt collector, they’ll call you at all times of the day and night – whether you’re getting ready for work, at work or home with your family for the evening. There are certain things creditors can and can’t do. But a life lesson I’ve been taught – mostly through experience – is that people sometimes do
