Last year, thousands of cancer patients, spouses, and estates sued Monsanto, the manufacturer behind the weedkiller Roundup, which has been linked to cancer.

As a Memphis Roundup Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma Attorney, I’ve been closely following these cases. Most notably, San Francisco jurors ruled that Roundup gave a former school groundskeeper, who used the carcinogenic product on a weekly basis, terminal non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He was awarded $289 million in damages.

Recently, there was another victory and step forward. In the latest trial, a different San Francisco-based jury awarded 70-year-old Edwin Hardeman $80 million in damages. He had used the product for nearly 30 years prior to having non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

What has been so infuriating about these cases is the degree to which the company has tried to outrun their deception and refuse to take responsibility. In a statement, the company said, “We have great sympathy for Mr. Hardeman and his family… the jury in this case deliberated for more than four days before reaching a causation verdict in phase one, an indication that it was very likely divided over the scientific evidence.”

No matter what they say, there is evidence to support these victims’ claims. As I’ve shared before, in 2015, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) concluded that glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, “is probably carcinogenic to humans.” Monsanto has continually denied this claim, maintaining that the IARC report is outnumbered by other studies that have found glyphosate does not cause cancer in humans.

Courtroom verdicts like this week’s muddle statements like those. Juries are listening. And we are right to keep pursuing justice for those who have suffered from using Roundup.

Nothing can bring back stolen time with our loved ones, or the irreparable harm done to men like Edwin Hardeman and Dewayne Johnson. Victories in the courtroom will never fully account for the emotional toll in cases like these. However, they can help families — who have been burdened with the financial cost of a devastating illness — get a sense of a peace. And they ensure that deceptive companies are held accountable.
