What to Do If You Can’t Reach Social Security About Your Disability Claim
If you’re applying for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), waiting for a decision, or trying to appeal a denial, it can be incredibly frustrating when you can’t reach the SSA about your disability claim.
You might be stuck on hold for hours, get vague answers, or never hear back at all.
You’re not alone—and you’re not out of options. Here’s what to do if you can’t reach Social Security about your disability claim.
1. Understand the Wait Is Part of the Process
The SSDI system is chronically overwhelmed. Long waits are, sadly, part of the process. If you’re just wondering about the status of your case, it might not be worth it to check with the SSA. They typically won’t be able to offer answers.
So instead, reserve any communication for major questions, concerns, or changes in your disability status.
2. Keep Trying—and Keep Records
It’s not unusual for SSA phone lines and local offices to be overwhelmed. And it’s becoming even more common as staff numbers dwindle and offices close.
If you call and don’t get through, document each attempt: write down the time, date, who you spoke to (if anyone), and what was said.
If you left a voicemail or sent an email, save copies or screenshots.
All of these records can help you later if there’s a delay or dispute in your claim.
3. Try Different Contact Methods
If you can’t reach your local SSA office by phone, try:
- Calling the national SSA line at 1-800-772-1213.
- Using your online SSA account at ssa.gov.
- Visiting the local office in person (if it’s open and you’re able to do so safely).
- Sending a written letter by certified mail so there’s a record of your communication.
Keep in mind that many SSA staff are overwhelmed, and sometimes claims move forward even if you haven’t heard from them directly—so don’t assume silence means nothing is happening.
4. Don’t Miss Any Deadlines on Your End
If you’re appealing a denial, you usually only have 60 days to file.
Even if you can’t get hold of someone at SSA, file your paperwork on time. Late appeals are usually denied unless you can prove a very good reason.
If you’re not sure how to move forward, that’s where a lawyer can help. If you want success in a timely manner, never go through the SSDI appeals process alone.
5. Work With an SSDI Lawyer Who Knows the System
As an SSDI lawyer in Memphis, I’ve worked with local SSA offices for years. I know how the process works, who to contact, and what paperwork gets results.
When you’re stuck in limbo or getting the runaround, having a lawyer handle the communication can take a huge burden off your shoulders. I also help prevent mistakes, fix earlier errors, and help you navigate the process so it doesn’t feel like such a mystery.
Our award-winning team will help you:
- keep track of deadlines
- submit the right forms
- follow up on your behalf, and
- make sure your claim doesn’t fall through the cracks.
You don’t have to deal with Social Security alone.
