Early last month, the agricultural company Monsanto, whose weedkiller Roundup has been linked to Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, was ordered to pay $289 million in damages in the first U.S. lawsuit over the company’s glyphosate-based product. Judging from the new lawsuits that have emerged in the weeks since then, that was only the beginning.

According to Reuters, the number of U.S. lawsuits against Monsanto is now about 8,000. In June, Bayer (which acquired Monsanto in June) disclosed 5,200 lawsuits against Monsanto. Sadly, that’s not enough to get the company to start taking responsibility for the lives it has harmed, like Dewayne Johnson, a former school groundskeeper with terminal cancer who was at the center of the first lawsuit. By all accounts, Bayer has maintained that the August verdict was inconsistent with other studies.

For those unfamiliar with Johnson’s story, he applied the weedkiller 20 to 30 times per year for work. After his diagnosis, his wife had to take on extra work to support their two young sons and now works two 40-hour-per-week jobs. Of course, the physical exhaustion and financial stress is nothing compared to the fact that Johnson may never get to see his two sons grow up. It is nothing compared to the pain those boys must feel from seeing their father — whose body is covered in lesions and who is unable to speak on his worst days — in pain.

Roundup is used more than any other herbicide throughout the world. In 2015, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) concluded that glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, “is probably carcinogenic to humans,” a claim Monsanto has long denied and continues to deny, even after the mounting evidence to the contrary. But they can only run from the truth for so long, and I know they’re not going to get away with it.
