Nursing home abuse can be physical, emotional or even financial.
It’s important to know all of the signs so you can protect YOUR loved one.
Signs of physical nursing home abuse
Physical abuse is the easiest type to detect. And when these signs are noticed, they need to be reported immediately because the conditions can worsen.
- bed sores
- unexplained bruises
- scarring
- broken or fractured bones
- signs of restraint, such as rope burns or bruising around the wrist
- symptoms of rape or sexual assault
- drug overdose
- sexual abuse
Signs of emotional nursing home abuse
Emotional abuse may not be as easily detectable as physical abuse, but it can be just as dangerous if it’s not reported immediately or if it goes unnoticed.
- arguments and reoccurring anger or tension between the caregiver and the elder
- personality changes in the elderly person
- inability to see the elderly person alone without the caregiver present
- verbal abuse by the caregiver toward the elderly person
Signs of financial nursing home abuse
Financial abuse in nursing homes isn’t as big of a topic as physical and emotional abuse, but it’s still important. It DOES happen.
Some caregivers may show favoritism or intimacy with a patient in order to manipulate them into giving away money. The caregiver may transfer money from the patient’s account into their own. Or they may steal cash.
