Bed bugs in a movie theater?

By: Darrell Castle

You hear about bed bugs in motels and hotels, but movie theaters? Get out of here! But that’s what happened in Lodi, California, where a theater is temporarily closed after several people complained they were bitten by bed bugs while watching a movie.

Two teens were covered in bed bug bites the morning after they were enjoying a flick at a local theater.

“When we woke up the next morning, we looked at each other and saw that we had all these red bumps all over us,” one of the girls said.

A family member told the local news that the girls woke up with hundreds of bites on their bodies.

“You shouldn’t have to worry about bugs at your local theater,” one of the girls said.

She’s right – you shouldn’t. Bed bugs shouldn’t be a problem in a theater. And when they’re determined a problem, they should be taken care of immediately. However, that apparently wasn’t the case in Lodi.

A family member reported the bites to the manager of Lodi Stadium 12 Saturday morning, but moviegoers continued to sit in the same theater. It wasn’t until around 2:00pm that the manager went into the theater to find the bed bugs inside.

The two girls aren’t the only customers who claimed bed bugs bit them in the theater.

A mother said that both her daughter and herself were bitten by bed bugs in the same theater.

“I wish they would have told us about it or put up a public notice, because she was taken out of school for itching, and I had to leave work early,” the mother said.

Establishments, like this movie theater, have a duty to keep their customers out of harm’s way. And when the problem begins to affect your lifestyle, then the company should be held accountable.
