You may have a loved one with chronic medical conditions that requires a lot of dependancy. Perhaps it requires a full-time caretaker.

Regardless of whether the caretaker is a family member or a true professional, the job can be stressful. It takes a special person with compassion, patience and strength to do the job. And when the stress and frustration builds up, the wrong person may take things too far and turn to abuse as his or her coping mechanism.

Each caregiver relationship is unique, but here are some general suggestions to prevent this abuse from happening.

Observe

Whether your family member or a professional has the duty of taking care of your loved one, always check in. There should be a checks-and-balances kind of system. Check in daily or weekly. Look for signs of abuse, which I detail in this blog post.

Get more help

Whether it’s you, a loved one or another professional, be sure to offer additional help to the caregiver. This will give the caregiver time off to rest and recuperate. As we all know from our own professional lives, a little vacation does the body well. The same holds true for anyone taking care of our loved ones.

Attend support groups

You’re not in this alone. There’s a whole community of people just like you. People who have a loved one in need of full-time assistance. Join these groups, get to know the people and use them as support for you and your situation. And encourage the caretaker to join a support group, too.
