Since it’s election season, candidates from both sides have spent the last few months talking about jobs. They all promise economic growth and stability to come; but the Mid-South still hasn’t seen much evidence of a recovery. A January jobs report shows a slight decrease in unemployment around the country and 243,000 new jobs created in January; and perhaps you remember when some economists declared the recession over in 2009? Yet here we are in 2012 with so many Memphis families looking for work, unable to pay their bills, and wishing for a recovery that’s just moving too slow for the Mid-South area. If you are in that boat, you may be feeling like there is no way out. It

Shelby County finally has a collection bin for unused or unwanted prescription drugs. It’s located at 11670 Memphis-Arlington Road in the Arlington Town Center. (We’ve included a map below.) The bin is a project of the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation. It is the 40th bin of its kind in the state of Tennessee, but surprisingly the first in Shelby County. Hopefully there will be more of these bins to come, since it’s so hard for many residents to get all the way out to Arlington. These bins are extremely useful: It’s important to dispose of prescription medication correctly. Otherwise, the ingredients can end up in the sewage, soil, and water supply and
The folks of Memphis checked their morning news as they woke up to find more sorrow. This morning, a pedestrian was fatally struck by a tractor trailer near the busy Poplar and Kirby intersection. The accident occurred right before 7:00am and left morning commuters rerouting due to the heavy police and fire presence investigating the scene. Details later came out that the pedestrian was 67-year-old Elizabeth Guess. Guess, who cleaned houses for a living, was crossing the street near the Poplar and Kirby intersection to reach the bus stop to go to another home. The truck was leaving Kroger and turning right onto Poplar from Kirby. The truck hit Guess in the street and dragged her several hundred feet until the driver of another
By: Darrell Castle The value of your personal injury case really depends on one thing. What’s the extent of the damages suffered? So really, the more the injury affected you, the more money you could be entitled to. Personal injury cases are designed to help you – the injured person. The person or company that’s found legally responsible for your injuries should be held accountable. But how’s the amount they must pay you determined? How much medical treatment was needed? You’ll be compensated for those medical bills. High medical bills are an indication or a serious injury and are therefore a fair measurement of damages. How much time did you have to take off work? You may be compensated for
According to a News Channel 5 report, a Memphis police officer was hit by a car in a Downtown parking garage located at the Washington Ave and North 4th St intersection. Though the officer was sent to the hospital, he was listed in non-critical condition. The report claimed the driver suffered from a medical condition. I’d like more details. What was the “medical condition?” And, if he knew he had a medical condition that may cause this kind of incident, he should know not to drive – that’s negligence. Did the medical condition develop right at that moment causing him to hit the police officer with no notice? Then, it may not have been negligence. But, if I had to
In case you haven’t seen this news, Memphis now ranks as the poorest large metro area in the nation by far, according to new census figures. Our poverty rate is at 19.1%. That’s 246,265 people living below the poverty line of (approximately) $22,100 for a family of four. In particular, rates of poverty skyrocket for Hispanic residents (38.6%). African-Americans in Memphis have a 28.6% poverty rate. These numbers mean that for every 100 people you pass on the street, 19 live in poverty – nearly two of every ten people. Within Memphis City limits, that number rises to over 25%! Plus many more people fall just above that poverty line and so struggle, too. Memphis’ economy is in a tough
