Lately, the standards have changed for table saws. Table saws are an incredibly dangerous tool, responsible for over 66,000 injuries per year. That’s why industry and federal regulators are considering a requirement for a product called “SawStop,” which stops the saw as soon as it touches human flesh. The process works surprisingly well and can effectively prevent lost fingers. The safety mechanism could increase costs by as much as $100-$200 per saw, but even with those economic impacts business owners could really benefit from making the change. Replacing and updating tools known for being harmful can save thousands of dollars in workers’ compensation costs, lost time, and an able workforce – not to mention it’s a key step to maintaining

Taken Straight from Your Paycheck

Even the most common debt can be taken straight from your paycheck, and it can leave a lot of Americans surprised and confused about their options. Here are some of the most common debts people have garnished from their wages: Wage Garnishment and Student Loans If you default on your student loans, the government can actually take the money out of your earnings. And in fact, they usually don’t even need a court order. That means you can lose 15% of your paycheck to student loans, even though you need that money to make ends meet. I’ve written quite a bit about student loans

The link between talcum powder and ovarian cancer By: Darrell Castle Talcum powder doesn’t have to contain asbestos to be dangerous, allegedly. If the statement above throws you off-guard, then you’re not alone. Many people didn’t know of the pre-1970s talcum powder tins that, at one time, contained asbestos. However, Deane Berg, a faithful 32-year user of Johnson’s Baby Power and Shower to Shower products, which are products that contain asbestos-free talcum powder, has been diagnosed with ovarian cancer at the age of 49. This has lead to a lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson, which has instigated more lawsuits alleging a link between body power and cancer. Talcum powder is a product used by generations of people to treat different

By: Darrell Castle As a bankruptcy attorney in Memphis, I’ve seen the effects unemployment can have on people in the community. However, with a new announcement today that Target has chosen Memphis as it’s location for a new $50 million distribution center, the Memphis employment outlook grew a little brighter. Target was choosing between Memphis and Olive Branch, and decided on Memphis because of the competitive costs, availability of workforce, real estate, local and state support and accessibility. This is not merely good news for the city of Memphis, but more importantly, it’s good for the PEOPLE of Memphis. “It goes without saying that a company like Target can choose to do business anywhere in the country, so it means
By: Darrell Castle You CAN get rid of your tax debt through a bankruptcy… sometimes. Your tax debt must meet the four criteria below: It has to be income tax. It can’t be sales tax. It can’t be payroll tax. It can’t be anything BUT income tax. No fraud. You can’t make any intentional attempt to evade taxes. If you do, then your tax debt will forever be non-dischargeable. Your taxes must be at least 3 years old. So that means this year – as of April 15 (the day your taxes are due) – your 2011 taxes will be dischargeable. Last but certainly not least, you HAVE TO file your tax returns. And they have to be filed ON
On Tuesday, the Memphis City Council announced they would put a vote on November’s ballot asking to increase the local sales tax. They also pushed forward the possibility of another referendum for a gasoline tax. It’s not like most of Memphis wants higher taxes. Take the possible gas tax increase: when the Shell station near our office at Poplar/Perkins offered free gas in the morning, it caused such a traffic jam that the police had to take over the streets for the entire day. Car crashes occurred one after the other as people clamored to the tank. However, spending is up and revenue is down. When the budget is out of whack like in Memphis, you only have so many
