Delayed gratification vs. instant gratification By: Darrell Castle There’s always something new and cool to buy – cars, TVs, nights out on the town, lavish beach trips – you name it! And there’s no problem with enjoying the nice things in life to the extent your budget will allow. After you pay your bills, buy your groceries and gas up your car, then what? Are you SAVING? This is where a key term comes into play, and really it’s a life philosophy – delayed gratification. Delayed gratification is a rival to instant gratification. Do you need that new car now, or should you save your money, create a financial cushion and purchase it later with almost no risk of
Starting in October, Johnson & Johnson (J&J) will add a new safety warning to the caps of Extra Strength Tylenol. The message will alert users that the popular over-the-counter drug contains acetaminophen, which has been linked to acute liver failure. Acetaminophen overdose is the number one cause of liver failure in the US. According to the Associated Press, the new warning will read: “Contains Acetaminophen” and “Always Read the Label.” But the bottles already display a warning that Tylenol contains acetaminophen and poses liver risks. So why the new addition? J&J is most likely trying to cut back on their liability with this incredibly dangerous product. Thousands of people have already reported serious liver damage from using Tylenol, and

He had a comfortable house and a comfortable life. John was…comfortable. He’ll admit to you that he could’ve saved better. He could’ve put more money into his emergency fund. Maybe he could’ve had a more modest car. Maybe his family could’ve ate at home more rather than going out. He should’ve looked

By: Darrell Castle Did you know you can file for bankruptcy to stop those annoying creditor phone calls? When you miss important payments, your creditors still want their money. They don’t care if you’re sick or lost your job. You owe them. They want what’s theirs. They’ll often go to extreme measures to get that money. Either on their own, or by hiring a debt collector, they’ll call you at all times of the day and night – whether you’re getting ready for work, at work or home with your family for the evening. There are certain things creditors can and can’t do. But a life lesson I’ve been taught – mostly through experience – is that people sometimes do
Around the United States, elder abuse and nursing home abuse are common problems. The best estimates suggest between 1 and 2 million Americans age 65 or older have been injured, exploited, or otherwise mistreated by someone on whom they depended for care or protection (1). But in many cases, the abuse occurs in situations where the elder is not free to escape, make calls, or otherwise report their mistreatment. For example, if an elder is being abused domestically, the adult child or spouse committing the abuse is unlikely to report the problem; but that person also has access to the phone, car, house keys, etc. In these domestic settings where the caregiving takes place in someone’s home, as few as

Using Shelby County Schools Layoffs To Exemplify the Importance of Saving Money | Memphis Bankruptcy
It’s important to save money as you never know when something like a job loss will occur By: Darrell Castle “Nearly 350 teachers who lost their jobs in Shelby County Schools due to school closings or falling enrollment have not been placed yet. And with the start of a new fiscal year Monday, they will be off the payroll.” That was a quote in the Commercial Appeal today, and as a Memphis bankruptcy attorney, I can only imagine the insecure feeling these teachers have. Often times, an unexpected incident like a job loss or a medical emergency – anything that puts a stop in income for a period of time – can end up being the straw the breaks
Retained Surgical Instruments in Medical Malpractice It’s an all too common problem in today’s operating rooms: medical malpractice caused by retained surgical instruments, or items left inside a patient after surgery. The causes are complicated and varied; but when 300-600 items are used in a single surgery, confusion can sometimes be unavoidable. However, new technology might offer a solution to help prevent injuries from this common error. Problems with Accounting for Surgical Instruments in the Past In the past, technicians have used a method called the “count sheet” to keep up with surgical instruments. A count sheet usually looked like a large spreadsheet that had to be printed and photocopied for each technician. If a change needed to be made,
