Every Tuesday we want to inform you of a new scam alert to avoid. This week involves a popular social media site – Pinterest. Big time social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram have been grounds for scammers to exploit, and now Pinterest, another site growing in popularity, especially among females, is becoming a common scammer ground as well. It all starts with an email from Pinterest. The email claims that your friend has shared a “pin” with you – the term the site uses for a digital scrapbook image. Since the email and link seem real, you will probably click on it. Common scam pins are ones with celebrities and beauty photos, giveaway offers, infographics and before and
Every Tuesday, we want to inform you of a new scam alert to avoid. This week involves emails. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) contacted several different funeral homes which confirmed they sometimes send out funeral notifications via email. Scammers seem to have taken notice of this and are using it to gain your personal information. Be wary if you receive an email with the subject line “funeral notification,” even if it’s from a funeral home in your area, or appears to be at least. The email may even have the funeral home’s name, colors and logos, but it could be anyone. Why is this dangerous? The email will instruct you to click on a link to view the invitation to “celebrate your
Every Tuesday, we want to inform you of a new scam alert to avoid. This week involves utilities. It’s been an abnormally cold winter here in Memphis, and though temperatures have been on the rise and the weather has been nice, we aren’t completely out of the winter woods yet. This is why you need to stay cautious of this new scam. If you get a phone call from the utility company, stay alert and listen to what they say carefully. Utility companies often do use the phone to reach their customers, but scammers do as well. Scammers are calling people, disguising themselves as the utility company, and telling their victims that they are late on their bill and need
Americans are very good at encouraging young people to do all the right things: Get the best education available Buy a home for your family Give yourself and your loved ones the best life you can But in all three examples, many people are being set up to fail. Take education. Schools are promising more and more to young people, but in so many cases they fail to provide the one thing you need when you graduate: a job. Or mortgage payments. When banks knowingly lend out in risky ways, they set up the borrower for high debt and eventual default. And we’re always telling people the tricks to “living well,” but that’s hard to do when you’re swamped with
We are still in the trenches reviewing cases related to temporary blood filters. These are tiny, removable devices put in the veins to help people with extreme risk for clotting, pulmonary embolism, stroke, or heart attack. Unfortunately they also have an extremely high failure rate. They can break and migrate through your body, piercing organs, requiring surgery, or even leading to death. With those heinous injuries in mind, I’m seeking justice on behalf of the victims. It’s important to remember I’m not going after the doctors or hospitals that implant these devices. I believe they are looking out for their patients and trying to do right by them. But the manufacturer knows all about the harm these devices can do. There’s evidence they’ve
By: Darrell Castle When nursing home abuse/neglect occurs, bed sores are almost always mentioned as a clue and side-effect. But, do you know what bed sores are? Well, if you have an elderly-loved one in a nursing home, then it’s extremely important that you do so you can be sure he or she is being properly cared for. In a nursing home or elderly care facility, bed sores are often a result of patients not being rolled over and moved around as needed. Many of these patients rely on the nursing home employees for their mobility – even for rolling over in bed. Bed sores can develop quickly and treatment can be difficult. The Mayo Clinic has provided a list
The recent deadly meningitis outbreak in Tennessee and around the country has people asking about compounding pharmacies, since it was a steroid injection from a compounding pharmacy that caused the problem in the first place. What are compounding pharmacies? What do they do? And are their products unsafe? Compounding is actually a traditional part of pharmacy. It just refers to pharmacists mixing ingredients for a unique patient or type of patient. It’s used commonly for patients who have allergies to specific ingredients that might be found in the normal commercial brand. However, lately what was once a relatively boutique pharmacy practice has grown into a large-scale manufacturing stronghold and a thorn in the side of regulators. In the case
Johnson & Johnson faces a number of lawsuits right now related to popular painkiller Tylenol. Filed in New Jersey – J&J’s home state – the lawsuits allege the company didn’t warn consumers adequately about the risks of Tylenol. Tylenol has been linked to severe liver damage, liver failure, and even death. It is the leading cause of acute liver failure in the United States. Now J&J is applying for some changes. The company’s defense team wants to move the trial to their own hometown of New Brunswick; they want to centralize the cases under one judge, even though the cases were all filed separately; and they want a new judge assigned. Why do they want all these things? Let’s start
Damages can be both physical and psychological By: Darrell Castle If you’ve been injured due to the negligence of another being, then you should always seek legal representation after you’ve received proper medical treatment. Why seek legal representation? Because you may be entitled to compensation for your damages. But what are damages? Well, “damage” is basically legal jargon for “injury.” And this is why it’s important to seek medical treatment after you’ve been injured, because your medical records will show what your damages actually are. The more your damages, the more compensation you may receive through litigation. Damages often relates to physical harm, but damages can sometimes be psychological harm as well. Some injuries can be so traumatic that it
