Roundup’s legal battles may not have dominated headlines these past few months like they did previously, but the fight is far from over. More than 42,000 Americans have sued Monsanto, the manufacturer of Roundup, with numerous trial dates already set all the way through October 2021.

Each and every one of these cases has been heartbreaking to watch, beginning with Dewayne Johnson back in 2018. Johnson, the former school groundskeeper with terminal cancer who was at the center of the first lawsuit, applied the weedkiller 20 to 30 times per year as part of his job. Following his diagnosis, his wife had to take on extra work to support the family’s two young boys—boys who may not get the chance to truly know their father.

Now, Jake Bellah, a 12-year-old boy with cancer, is among the next wave of plaintiffs taking on the herbicide manufacturer. He is one of two young plaintiffs in the upcoming January trials who developed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma after repeated exposure to Roundup. Bellah’s lawyers say that he was exposed while playing in his family’s garden area, where his father frequently applied Roundup.

This toxic product is destroying lives.

In 2015, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) concluded that glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, “is probably carcinogenic to humans.” Monsanto has continually denied this claim, maintaining that the IARC report is outnumbered by other studies that have found glyphosate does not cause cancer in humans.

Other studies have found that when glyphosate is combined with the other chemicals in Roundup, it becomes 1,000 times more toxic. And you don’t have to have used the weedkiller itself to be at risk.

As the latest cases go to show, victims include not only hard-working adults, but young children whose lives are just beginning.
