According to the Commercial Appeal, a steel-galvanizing plant is coming to Memphis and will initially hire 25-30 people. Voight & Schweitzer (V&S) is an Ohio-based company that operates 30 steel-galvanizing plants in the US and Europe. The company will invest up to $10 million to build one in Shelby County. A typical V&S plant employs 45 people and they’re looking to eventually move to that number once they get their feet on the ground and running. The plant will hire an array of workers, including truck drivers, maintenance workers, general managers, salesmen and laborers. “Anyone who has an aptitude for learning and knows about steel,” Terry Wolfe, Vice President and Director of Sales & Marketing, said is who they’re looking
According to a report, lawsuits against Tylenol continue to grow in federal multidistrict litigation. In each of the lawsuits, the patient claims they suffered serious liver damage as a result of Tylenol-brand medications. Quite often, these damages didn’t even come from abusing the medication, but from using it as the label directs. In 2013, when the US Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) established the Tylenol litigation, only 27 product liability claims against Tylenol were pending in federal courts around the nation. Now, there are 120 claims. Multidistrict litigation is a legal process used to speed the process of complex cases. All of this began in 2009 when the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) reported that acetaminophen was the leading
According to Nerd Wallet, 40% of Tennessee renters spend more than 35% of their income on housing. However, economist and the US Department of Housing and Urban Development agree that spending more than 30% of your income on housing is not sustainable and leaves homeowners short on other living necessities. These numbers could help explain foreclosure rates in Memphis and the state of Tennessee. If you’re behind on your mortgage, you should look into filing for bankruptcy. A Chapter 13 bankruptcy can stop the inevitable foreclosure and allow you to pay back your debt over a period of years instead of all at once. A Chapter 7 bankruptcy can be used to clear out all of your other debt to
3 Shocking Reasons the Johnson & Johnson Trial Should Be Front Page News In February 2016, a jury in Missouri awarded $72 million in damages to the family of an Alabama woman who died from ovarian cancer. The lawsuit claimed her cancer was caused by using Johnson & Johnson’s well-known baby powder and other products with talc. $72 million is shocking, but even more shocking is that $62 million of that was punitive. This jury wanted vengeance. You may wonder what in the world would make a jury so angry? Here is what the plaintiff alleged, with evidence put forward at trial. This is all public trial record, although not many people have seen the transcripts: 1) Silencing of the
How Gender Relates to Debt, and What Women Can Do About It As a Memphis bankruptcy lawyer, I tend to see more women in my office than men. This fits the national trend: across the US, women file bankruptcy more often. From what I’ve seen, there are some key reasons: Problems Arising from Single Parenting Women are often the family caregivers, and sometimes they don’t have any help. I talk with a lot of single mothers and grandmothers who struggle every day to make ends meet. Sometimes things happen that devastate these women’s fragile finances even more: Job Loss The job market is challenging enough, but especially for single mothers. Women who have children depending on them back home need
If you’re looking for a personal injury lawyer, it may seem like they’re all the same. They all say they have (blank) years of experience and that they’ll get results. And of course you can ask them about these things. As a Memphis personal injury lawyer, I appreciate when clients ask about my experience or the results I’ve gotten. But there’s another thing you need from a personal injury lawyer that you can’t just prove from a website: Compassion. If you ever need a personal injury lawyer, you usually have been through something devastating. From traumatic car accidents to lost loved ones, I know we’re meeting people at a dark time in their lives. I never take that lightly, and
Bankruptcy is a big decision, and it’s not one I encourage people to enter lightly. If you have other obvious options to pay off your debt, those may very well be the best choice for you and your family. But there are some situations in which you might need to file immediately. I see these in my office all the time. Here are some key moments I’ve seen people choose not to file bankruptcy that have had terrible results: When you’re dipping into your retirement accounts When your credit is already devastated, but you’re worried bankruptcy will hurt it more When your job loss or medical emergency puts you in serious debt but you want to believe it’s temporary It
Evictions Becoming an Epidemic in Memphis and Nationwide As a bankruptcy lawyer in Memphis, eviction is one of the saddest things I see. And it’s happening at alarming rates across the Mid-South and the rest of the country. As Matthew Desmond, author of the new book Evicted, told the New York Times: The movers “can be out from 8 a.m. until sundown. You see one eviction and you’re overcome, but then there’s another one and another one and another one.” I feel for landlords who desperately need the rent checks. It’s a terrible situation for everyone involved. But to watch a child’s bed and toys stacked up heartlessly on the side of the road is too tragic for words. And
By now you’ve probably heard about the $72 million verdict a jury found against Johnson & Johnson for the link between talcum powder and ovarian cancer. I know a lot of people might hear this $ amount and say, “That’s ridiculous.” But if you could only see the documents (which so far have only been seen by a jury and a few lawyers), you would understand why that jury was angry. The products in question are shower to shower powder and baby powder. Many women use these products from the time they are babies well into adulthood. In my opinion, the evidence obtained through discovery in this case shows overwhelmingly that Johnson & Johnson knew very well that the talcum powder could
