Video Transcript Hello, I’m Darrell Castle – an attorney licensed to practice law in the state of Tennessee and today, I’m talking about the unfortunate story, or the sad story, whichever way you want to look at it, of people losing their jobs. Here in my county, Shelby County (that’s Memphis), people are losing their jobs, a lot of municipal school employees and teachers. There was an announcement today that about 800 of those people are probably going to lose their job. What if you were one of those people? What
More jobs is a good thing By: Darrell Castle Happy Friday, everyone. I’d like to transition us into an enjoyable weekend by touching on the good news reported yesterday by the Commercial Appeal in which they detailed metro Memphis adding 9,000 jobs in July. Employers reported 607,300 full-time and part-time payroll jobs in Memphis last month. That was the highest July total in Memphis since 2005. This is positive news, but we’re not there yet. The local economy needs to be keep building on this – yes, the unemployment rate has dipped to 8.9 percent, but that’s still high. As a bankruptcy attorney who’s practiced law in Memphis for over 30 years, I’ve seen how people can be affected by
What can happen when you don’t practice proper fireworks safety By: Darrell Castle Last Thursday, I wrote a blog post on fireworks safety leading up to Friday’s July 4th celebrations. In the post, I mentioned how dangerous fireworks can become when operated with a certain degree of negligence. A family in Ohio caught the wrath of such negligence. A 4-month-old was in her playpen on the porch when a neighbor’s fireworks landed on her, leaving her critically injured. According to a witness, a 10-year-old neighbor kicked over a lit tubular firework which shot into the playpen, burning the 4-month-old girl. The girl’s entire face is burned and the grandmother injured her fingers rescuing her. A hospital spokeswoman said the baby’s

I’m an attorney licensed to practice law in the state of Tennessee and on this video I’m talking about cancer – ovarian cancer, uterine cancer and cancers of that type. As medical care becomes harder and harder to afford, some doctors are encouraging patients to use credit cards. But these aren’t just any credit cards – these are medical credit cards. Medical credit cards allow patients to pay for expensive work insurance won’t cover. That might seem especially helpful with doctors like the dentist or eye doctor, since many people don’t have insurance to cover this specialty care. Even with the new health care laws going into effect, dental care remains a costly problem for a lot of us. But while medical credit cards may seem like a good solution in the moment, they can also cause a lifetime of pain. Medical credit cards have an extremely high interest rate
Fireworks are illegal within the Memphis city limits in order to prevent fireworks injuries. But I still heard neighbors shooting them off the entire 4th of July holiday weekend. They’re fun and it’s a celebration — I get it. But often, we ignite fireworks without seriously considering the dangers. Every year, we hear about the latest firework incident. Someone locally was seriously hurt, or a house burned down. Both of these things unfortunatelly happened this year. We fail to hear and see these stories as something that could happen to us. We think we’re invincible, and those horrible things won’t happen to us. But maybe we can learn our lesson from a star NFL player. Fireworks Injuries Can Affect Anyone
By: Darrell Castle Debt can put a lot of stress on a person, and if the problem is left unsettled, bad things can happen. A story surfaced in the Memphis news this week when a local man posted a video on Facebook of a panhandler getting beaten up. In this video, the man – Joseph Johnson – got out of his truck at the intersection of I-240 and Perkins and began attacking a panhandler on the sidewalk. Johnson posted on Facebook that this panhandler used to work for his family business, Johnson Tree Service, and stole seven of his chainsaws. In the Facebook post, Johnson said he is behind on his bills and due to be evicted from his home,
As car accident attorneys in Memphis, we see crashes happen all the time that could have been prevented if the driver had just been focused. Yes, focused. You don’t have to be under the influence to lose control of the car without even realizing it. It can and does happen because of distracted driving. What Causes Distracted Driving? The most infamous form of distraction on the road is the ever-tempting text message. Checking or sending a text takes your eyes off the road an average of 4.6 seconds at a time. At 55mph, that means you travel the length of a football field without looking. The result can be as dangerous and life-threatening as drunk driving. But other forms of
